HEADWAY TUNBRIDGE WELLS AND DISTRICT
Amount donated: £41,984.34
Headway Tunbridge Wells and District was founded in 1984 in the aftermath of a car accident that left Nick Munro with a severe head injury. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2010 it was the nominated recipient of funds raised by the Richard Burns Foundation and Colin McRae Vision.
Nick’s parents Pam and Michael found that after their son’s rehabilitation there was little support for anyone coping with a brain injury so, with the help of a small number of families in a similar situation they decided to set up a support group.
In 1989, following research, publicity and fundraising, the new charity, Headway Tunbridge Wells and District, became operational for one day a week, offering activities and social contact for those with brain injuries and to give respite to their families.
Three years later, in 1992, Headway had raised enough funds to open a base at Pembury Hospital in Kent and extended the service to three days a week. In 2007 it had to leave to make way for a new hospital and relocated to a new centre in Tunbridge Wells.
The centre enables people with a brain injury to maximise their skills or develop new interests, rebuild their confidence and self-esteem and spend a few hours in the company of friends who have suffered similar experiences.
To purchase this essential new centre and to continue its vital work, Headway has undertaken major ongoing fundraising and is especially grateful to the Richard Burns Foundation for its support in 2010.
It is thanks to the generosity of individuals, organisations and benefactors who raise funds and volunteer their time for the benefit of the charity that enables Headway to continue its support for brain injured people and their families and friends.
Di Drummond, service manager, said: "The Richard Burns Foundation and Headway Tunbridge Wells and District worked closely together to promote their charities at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010. It was the first time that Headway has attended such a prestigious event and we were very grateful for the opportunity. The RBF team organised and guided us through the event and, with their help and experience, we were able to maximise this opportunity to raise funds towards our new centre for people with brain injuries. We can’t thank RBF enough, as Headway has now benefited by a wonderful donation of £41,984.34, raised at Goodwood. We would not have been able to achieve this through our usual fundraising efforts and it will make such a difference. Thanks to you all."
