Indri wins third Richard Burns Memorial Rally

16 August, 2010

John Indri has won the third annual Richard Burns Memorial Rally, which took place at Royal Air Force Marham in Norfolk over the weekend (August 14/15).

The event, which raised vital funds for the Richard Burns Foundation and RAF Benevolent Fund, was first run in 2008 in memory of England’s only world rally champion, who lost his brave battle with brain cancer in November 2005.

Indri, who made his name driving MG Metro 6R4s, was using a Darrian T90 GTR when he took victory on the asphalt rally alongside co-driver John Harland.

They had been embroiled in a close battle with Simon Mauger until the Ford Escort driver stopped in the closing stages with a broken driveshaft. His misfortune enabled Bruce Edwards and Barry Young, in another Darrian, to take second place.

Father and daughter pair Tony and Emma Hewitt completed the podium in their Mitsubishi Lancer with James Grint, brother of Harry Potter star Rupert, fourth.

Last year’s winner Ray Brammer lost time with a puncture on Saturday’s opening test before crashing out in the closing stages.

Jason Plato, a former friend of Richard Burns, made a guest appearance at the event. Richard’s father Alex Burns co-drove Gordon Jarvis to 62nd overall in a Talbot Sunbeam TI.

The event, which attracted an enthusiastic crowd, started in wet conditions but Sunday’s action took place in bright sunshine.
