Spa class victory for RBF supporter Twyman

04 August, 2010

Joe Twyman, a supporter of the Richard Burns Foundation, has claimed a stunning debut victory in the gruelling Spa 24 Hours motor race.

Twyman won the GT4 class in 22nd overall at the wheel of a Jota Sport-run Aston Martin N24, which he was sharing with Simon Dolan, Sam Hancock and Roger Wills.

Carrying RBF branding on his crash helmet and race suit as well as wearing his RBF wristband, the 24-year-old from St Albans, UK, was taking part in the round-the-clock endure for the first time.

He said: “I had never done the Spa 24 Hours before but I have done many laps at Spa so I know it well and that really helped as it took away an element of something to learn.”

Twyman covered two three-hour stints during the race, one at night and one in the morning. He said the night stint was “incredible”, adding: “Being passed by quicker cars with brake discs and exhausts glowing was cool. We had a few technical issues with the car but the Jota engineers and Aston Martin people were on top of them pretty quickly.”

As somebody who has battled cancer Twyman is all too aware of the importance of the RBF and the efforts it goes to in order to raise money to help those suffering from brain cancer and other neurological disorders.

“The charity is a great cause,” said Twyman. “For me I like fundraising through my passion [motorsport] and RBF do lots of things in the industry. I like the idea of supporting more than one cause as well. How can you prioritise when there are so many good causes?”

Twyman’s next scheduled event is the Oulton Park Gold Cup at the end of August when he is due to drive a McLaren M1B at the Cheshire, UK, venue.
