“Thank you for reading my first blog as patron of the Richard Burns Foundation. I became patron at a launch on Rally Sweden this year – the first round of the World Rally Championship – and I’m really pleased to do this job, although it seems strange that I have to. Still now, I can hardly believe what happened to Richard, and there are so many strange and mixed feelings.

I don’t think everyone knows completely what he went through, and in some ways this is good as it was really not nice. When Richard and I were driving together, we were not always the best of friends, although when he first came to Peugeot I was grateful because it was a way for me to increase my salary!

Then we had the usual things that team mates do – a few good battles, a few times when we didn’t speak to each other so much, and a lot of time spent on planes together – and in the end we got to know each other well. And we emerged from the experience as friends.

The shock that I felt when I heard how ill Richard was is something that will always stay with me. What happened to him is terrible and shouldn’t happen to anyone. These things are so out of our control, sometimes you feel that there is nothing you can do about it. But actually, there are lots of things you can do. And that is why I agreed to become patron of the Richard Burns Foundation.

The money that the Foundation raises will go towards making the lives of people affected by this terrible disease easier. It will also help to fund treatment and research, and this will help both the victims of this illness and also their family and friends.

Becoming involved in the Richard Burns Foundation is a simple thing that anyone can do to help fight cancer and also remember Richard. He inspired me in the way that he dealt with his illness and I hope that he will inspire you too. Every month or so I will update my blog just so people know what I have been up to and the activities that the Richard Burns Foundation has carried out internationally.

On any of the rallies I do I’ll be carrying Richard Burns Foundation branding – and this is probably where you’ll read about it first. If you have any questions or you want to share your memories of Richard with me, please drop me a line on marcus@richardburnsfoundation.com

Kiitos!
